Thanks to the ever-evolving DNA of wrens and their forums, things have gotten a little more complex than when The Wren Forum first began. So to help you out, here are some FAQs. En, as they say, joy.

Q: How do I post something?
A: To prevent spam postings and hijackings, I’m using a simple registration thingy to make sure bots and such can’t join in the fun. Just click “Wanna Rant? Register!” in the sidebar, under Wren Control. All you need to do is choose a user name, type in a legitimate e-mail, and that’s it. Your password will be mailed to you instantly. I won’t give your e-mail out to anyone, even the NSA.
NOTE: I have turned off registration for now because I was getting too many spam registrations. Until WordPress offers a way to manage registrations, I’ll have to keep it off. But if you really want to register, just send me an e-mail and I can create an account for you. Yay!
Q: Registering sounds scary. Should I be scared by the scary registration?
A: No, silly goose! The minimum info required for registration is the user name you choose and your e-mail. Your registration e-mail can only be seen by me (though e-mails attached to comments can be seen… I need to find a plugin to fix that!) Once registered, you can go to your profile area and include as much info as you want. You can even remove your e-mail address entirely, though you’ll miss out on the fun alerts (see “benefits” question). Currently, none of your info is available publicly.
REPEATED NOTE: As I mentioned in the previous A, I have turned off registration for now because I was getting too many spam registrations. Until WordPress offers a way to manage registrations, I’ll have to keep it off. But if you really want to register, just send me an e-mail and I can create an account for you. Yay!
Q: Do I have to register to post a comment to a post?
A: Nope. The comment form requires an e-mail address, but this is a mere formality. The e-mail is not published, though registered users can see them in the admin area.
Q: What are some of the other benefits to being a Wren Forum registered stooge?
A: Well, you have more control over your posts. You can go back later and edit them or delete them (but I highly recommend you not delete anything you’ve written because that will destroy the balance of the universe), and you get e-mail alerts when people comment on your posts. You’ll also get your very own RSS feed, so your mom and aunt and hamster can get alerts whenever you write something new and profound.
Q: What are the RSS options here now?
A: You can RSS the hell out of the new Wren Forum. Subscribe to the main RSS feed to receive alerts when any new posts are added. Subscribe to the RSS comments feed to be alerted when any comments are added. Subscribe to the RSS feed for a particular post to receive notification of any comments added to that post. Subscribe to a Category feed to be alerted to any additions under that category. And subscribe to a particular author’s RSS feed to see when they’ve posted anything new. My God, can you get over the power?
Q: Is a permalink what I think it is?
A: No, it is not a flat, smooth stick used in the application of salves. It is, instead, the permanent link to a particular post or comment, which you can use for reference in another post, either on The Wren Forum, or anywhere else on the Web!
Q: What the hell is TrackBack?
A: TrackBack is a groovy feature wherein you can link to other postings on the Web and they automatically get linked back to you. If you copy the TrackBack link from a Canadian blogger’s post about hiccups, say, and then use that in your own post (there’s a TrackBack box for these links), your post appears as a comment in the Canadian hiccupper’s post! Nifty! You should be sure to include the link to the hiccup post as well if you want people to be able to link there from your post.
Q: Why doesn’t The Wren Forum work in my browser? (How did I ask this?)
A: To your parenthetical question, you surely must have logged in from your local public library… you know, the place where the Feds can watch you to prevent terrorism. As for the real question, I don’t know. You see, I took the WordPress software and a nice theme and tweaked them both to get The Wren Forum to work how I wanted it to. The WordPress code was barely altered, so the browser conflicts are coming from the theme. As I get time to continually improve the Forum, I hope to nail down why the altered theme doesn’t work in older browsers. But for now, be assured it works fine in Safari, Firefox, Opera, and with newer IE on Windows 2000 and on.
Q: Why was George Bush such a disaster?
A: I’m sorry, that’s all the time I have for now…
