I have caught myself in a spelling error. The term is in fact spelled “whup-ass,” not “whoop-ass.” “Whoop” and “whup” are quite different. Opening a can of whup-ass is exactly what the term implies: someone’s gonna get their ass whuped. However, opening a can of whoop-ass might be more relevant at a sporting event or New Year’s Eve, where a hearty, deep-lunged shout of approval or glee is in order.
